JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

The short answer
- JPG — best for photographs where a small file matters more than perfect detail.
- PNG — best for graphics, screenshots, logos and anything that needs transparency or crisp edges.
- WebP — a modern format that usually produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality, and supports transparency.
JPG
JPG uses lossy compression: it discards detail the eye barely notices to make photos small. It does not support transparency, and repeatedly re-saving a JPG gradually lowers quality. It is supported everywhere.
PNG
PNG is lossless, so text and sharp lines stay clean, and it supports transparent backgrounds. The trade-off is size: a photo saved as PNG is typically much larger than the same photo as JPG.
WebP
WebP can be lossy or lossless and supports transparency, which is why many sites use it for faster page loads. Modern browsers handle it well; some older software and upload forms still reject it, in which case converting to JPG or PNG is the safe fallback.
How to convert between them
- Open the Image Converter and upload your image.
- Choose PNG, JPG or WEBP as the target format.
- Click Convert image and download the result.
One thing to watch: transparency
JPG cannot store transparency, so converting a transparent PNG to JPG fills the transparent areas with white. Keep the PNG or WebP if you need the transparency. Conversion runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
