How to Make a Scanned PDF Searchable (OCR)

Published 10/6/2026 · Last updated 10/6/2026

Why scanned PDFs can't be searched

When you scan paper, the PDF stores each page as an image. There is no real text inside, so you cannot search for a word, select a sentence or copy a number — and tools that read PDF text, like a PDF-to-Word converter, find nothing to extract.

What OCR does

OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text in each page image and adds an invisible, selectable text layer behind it. The page looks exactly the same, but you can now search, highlight and copy the content.

Make a scanned PDF searchable

  • Open the OCR PDF tool and upload your scanned PDF.
  • Click Run OCR.
  • Wait while each page is read — longer documents take longer.
  • Download the searchable PDF.

Getting accurate results

Accuracy depends on scan quality: clean, straight, well-lit pages with clear fonts recognize very accurately, while blurry scans or handwriting produce errors. The current version is optimized for English text, so other languages may be less accurate.

What to do next

Once the PDF has a text layer, PDF to Word can extract it into an editable document, or you can reduce the size with Compress PDF. OCR runs in your browser, so the scan is never uploaded.
